A Great and Terrible Beauty is the first book in the Gemma Doyle series by Libba Bray. A story filled with tragedy and secrets. A young girl raised in India till the mysterious murder of her mother sends her to England to Spence Academy, where she learns of manners and good behavior. But there is much more to uncover at Spence, like an ancient order and other releams. She comes to meet new friends and the gypsies who live in the woods, and a boy who she recognizes from the scene of her mother’s death. With great power comes great responsibility, To bad she has to figure that out the hard way.
The book kept me drawn in and always questioning what will happen next. The characters were very likable and interesting. Witchcraft isn’t exactly the right term for it but whatever this is it’s pretty cool till things start to get out of hand. The story isn’t completely focused on teenage romance as most of today’s books are, cough Twilight cough. Though I did love Katrik. The book was great and I recommend it to anyone looking for a good series.
