The Forest of Hands and Teeth is a book by Carrie Ryan. It focusses on a young girl, named Mary, who lives in what they think is the last colony on Earth that is surrounded by the unconsecrated (zombies). They live their lives in fear that they might end up an unconsecrated if they are ever bitten by one. All Mary wants is to be married to the boy of her dreams, Travis but he is already betrothed to her best friend. She is forced to either marry Harry, the brother of Travis or become a sister. After she loses both her father and mother then is forced to live with the sisters after her brother disowns her, claiming it was her fault for their mother becoming an unconsecrated. Mary does keep one dream though ... To visit the ocean. No one had seen it though her mother claims it is real and told her stories of it being the only place not touched by the unconsecrated. Mary never forgets the stories and never stops dreaming of one day finding it. Though a mysterious visitor has been taken in by the sisters ... A visitor not from the village. Soon Mary finds herself on a journey to find the ocean with the people she loves most. This book was great! It really had me pulled in and attach to certain parts. It is a very depressing book but I think it gives us all hope. It definately shows when everything goes wrong, don't give up, continue on ... and don't let anything stand in the way of your dreams no matter what. I recommend this book to anyone wanting an erie book that really provokes thought even with all the drama. It is a good read.
